Acrostic Advent

It’s become an unexpected tradition for me to write some acrostic poems for the liturgical season of Advent (the period of time preparing for Christmas). Each week in Advent is gifted a certain theme: hope, peace, joy and love. This year I wrote on the first three, while realizing that love is the underlying motif of each. I’ve come to understand love in the relationships of those central to my heart and life this year, and can see how this ripples into my poetry. I’m humbled and wonderstruck by the ways that love has twinkled in surprising occasions and connections, and can’t wait to see where and how these seeds sprout and blossom in the new year.

Hope

How can this be?

Once the dust of shock settles

Possibilities I only ever dreamed

Entwine season’s wonder with wishes becoming real.

Peace

Perhaps peace is a sense of

Embodied belonging-

A knowing. Deep within

Calm radiates when

Eyes of the heart meet.

Joy

Just one quiet question-

One time of true tenderness can

Yield shimmering spring in the winter night.
