Sunlit Harvest

Darwin mouse drawing by Jime Wimmer

This poem was a joy to write. It was crafted for my friend Jime Wimmer, who helped me bring my wildflower quill pen logo idea to life. Jime and her husband, Mike, have become dear friends during this season I’ve spent in the South. Most weekends you could find the Wimmers, my parents and I enjoying Sunday brunch together.

I challenged myself to write from the perspective of this sweet woodland mouse, Darwin, that Jime created. It was fun to consider new ways to describe autumn and harvest time. Yet, my poetic spiritual sense of living and being still seems to shine through.

You can see more of Jime and Mike’s beautiful artwork at Wimmer’s Woods.

Darwin's Sunlit Harvest

Pumpkin sunlight is becoming vanilla clouds.

Nature's palette is of umber and crimson, gold and violet leaves-

beams of abundance slowly melting into a winter's rest.

I peek outside as the sun begins to wake on the horizon.

Her first warm rays of glowing light dance

welcoming my herbs and flowers into goodness and possibility.

Each seed I've planted has grown into its unique beauty.

It is time. Today is harvest day.

My stone path guides me onward to my garden;

plants embrace me with their blissful presence.

When I reach the far edge of the patch I gently kneel to the Earth with reverence.

My small paws pad the petals of the nearest blossom.

Her wisdom within is a reminder of the natural journey of becoming who we are.

With a sweet, serene tug,

I pluck the blossom from her spot and place her in my pouch.

….

At day's end a cozy pillow of wildflower tea steeps from my tending and plucking.

I feel nature cradling me with love, and my heart is the summer sun.
